“Westover has somehow managed not only to capture her unsurpassably exceptional upbringing, but to make her current situation seem not so exceptional at all, and resonant for many others.”—The New York Times Book Review“Westover is a keen and honest guide to the difficulties of filial love, and to the enchantment of embracing a life of the mind.”—The New Yorker“An amazing story, and truly inspiring. It’s even better than you’ve heard.”—Bill Gates “Heart-wrenching . . . a beautiful testament to the power of education to open eyes and change lives.”—Amy Chua, The New York Times Book Review“A coming-of-age memoir reminiscent of The Glass Castle.”—O: The Oprah Magazine“Westover’s one-of-a-kind memoir is about the shaping of a mind. . . . In briskly paced prose, she evokes a childhood that completely defined her. Yet it was also, she gradually sensed, deforming her.”—The Atlantic“Tara Westover is living proof that some people are flat-out, boots-always-laced-up indomitable. Her new book, Educated, is a heartbreaking, heartwarming, best-in-years memoir about striding beyond the limitations of birth and environment into a better life. . . . ★★★★ out of four.”—USA Today“[Educated] left me speechless with wonder. [Westover’s] lyrical prose is mesmerizing, as is her personal story, growing up in a family in which girls were supposed to aspire only to become wives—and in which coveting an education was considered sinful. Her journey will surprise and inspire men and women alike.”—Refinery29 “Riveting . . . Westover brings readers deep into this world, a milieu usually hidden from outsiders. . . . Her story is remarkable, as each extreme anecdote described in tidy prose attests.”—The Economist “A subtle, nuanced study of how dysfunction of any kind can be normalized even within the most conventional family structure, and of the damage such containment can do.”—Financial Times “Whether narrating scenes of fury and violence or evoking rural landscapes or tortured self-analysis, Westover writes with uncommon intelligence and grace. . . . One of the most improbable and fascinating journeys I’ve read in recent years.”—Newsday

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • An unforgettable memoir about a young girl who, kept out of school, leaves her survivalist family and goes on to earn a PhD from Cambridge University Book Club Pick for Now Read This, from PBS NewsHour and The New York Times "A coming-of-age memoir reminiscent of The Glass Castle."-O: The Oprah Magazine "Tara Westover is living proof that some people are flat-out, boots-always-laced-up indomitable."-USA Today "The extremity of Westover's upbringing emerges gradually through her telling, which only makes the telling more alluring and harrowing."-The New York Times Book Review Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches and sleeping with her "head-for-the-hills" bag. In the summer she stewed herbs for her mother, a midwife and healer, and in the winter she salvaged metal in her father's junkyard. Her father distrusted the medical establishment, so Tara never saw a doctor or nurse. Gashes and concussions, even burns from explosions, were all treated at home with herbalism. The family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when an older brother became violent. When another brother got himself into college and came back with news of the world beyond the mountain, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. She taught herself enough mathematics, grammar, and science to take the ACT and was admitted to Brigham Young University. There, she studied psychology, politics, philosophy, and history, learning for the first time about pivotal world events like the Holocaust and the Civil Rights Movement. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University. Only then would she wonder if she'd traveled too far, if there was still a way home. Educated is an account of the struggle for self-invention. It is a tale of fierce family loyalty, and of the grief that comes from severing one's closest ties. With the acute insight that distinguishes all great writers, Westover has crafted a universal coming-of-age story that gets to the heart of what an education is and what it offers: the perspective to see one's life through new eyes, and the will to change it.

How does one review someone’s truth, someone’s life? Educated is an excellent, articulate, even poetic memoir. Westover tells her story with such clarity, nuance and, interestingly, objectivity, that you feel as if you, too, are slowly coming to terms with her upbringing. What inspires me most is her strength, determination and how she deals with her past. She examines the latter with an unflinching curiosity and love that seems incredibly rare. As a teacher, who has ambivalent feelings about how we educate our children, I wish Westover’s book were required reading in schools. Not only to convey to students how privileged they are to receive an education, but to remind them of their ability to educate themselves and to rise above their circumstances. Educated is a remarkable book written by a remarkable woman.
Hochachtung an Ms Westover.
Interesting subject. The first half is quite engrossing. But then one starts to wonder why she keeps going back and back to this hurtful father and brother and her non supportive mother. In the end it is not so much a book about coming of age in the mountains with a strange family but about how a bipolar disorder destroys a family.
Teilweise kann man während dem Lesen garnicht richtig fassen, dass es sich um wahre Begebenheiten handelt. Der Schreibstil ist schön flüssig und spannend und ich habe das Buch verschlungen. Würde ich jedem weiterempfehlen
Wow, once I went through the first 2 chapters, I could not put the book down.A girl who grew up in a family that does not believe in public education nor modern medicine, and religion is taken in a wrong way; with abusive and violent father and brother, and also a mother who did not always stand up to fight for her. There are constant distortion of facts, blind and shifted loyalty to family. It is a constant challenge of staying sane and try to be better than the status quo, while everyone else is dragging you down. This books wonderfully describes the struggle one has to go through while deciding what is important: family approval, personal belief, acceptance by society, etc. Also truly inspiring of how Tara can focus in times of needs for the school and the drive of achieve impossible things.
An impressive account of a young woman who sets out to get an education, from being homeschooled or rather non-schooled to eventually Cambridge and Harvard. It also is a story of abuse and violence and the hard journey of freeing oneself from mental and emotional shackles. I was very moved by this woman and her story, which she freely and openly shares with us. Thank you, Tara.
Amazing biography, very well written and Tara tells her story in an incredibly nuanced way, in spite of everything that she had to go through, she tries not to judge and shows no bitterness, which is quite a feat after what she had to endure. Insightful and engrossing, I couldn't put this book down and it stayed with me long after I had read it. Food for thought. Highly recommended.
Myself coming from a big family and in my early thirties, I loved the book and the way it pictured the adventure of maturing to an adult, take distance with your parents yet acknowledging and respecting their love and intention. One of the defining learning experience of a lifetime. Although not a native speaker, I definitely liked the writing still, great literature. Thanks to Tara Westover
